Amazon Japan listing preparation

Amazon Japan listing localization: prepare the facts first.

Before asking for Japanese copy, give your reviewer a product brief they can trust. Separate confirmed specifications, suggested wording and unanswered questions so translation does not turn an assumption into a product claim.

Establish which listing you are preparing.

Amazon Japan's product-listing guide distinguishes matching an offer to an existing catalog product from creating a new product detail page. Its preparation guidance covers product identification, title, brand, descriptions and images, while offer information includes price, condition, inventory and shipping.

Ask the catalog operator to identify the exact product and Japan listing route before commissioning a full rewrite. Record the matching ASIN when one exists, or the proposed new-product record when it does not. A similar photograph is not enough to establish that two items have the same specifications or pack contents.

For a US listing being expanded to Japan, Amazon describes cross-listing through Build International Listings in its Japan expansion guide. Treat the resulting Japan detail page as something your team must inspect; a copied field is not evidence that its meaning fits your product or audience.

A fictional storage-pouch source brief.

This is a fictional example for English source preparation. It is not a client project, an Amazon template, approved Japanese copy or a claim about a real product. All specifications below are supplied assumptions for this exercise.

  • Item: an unbranded zip storage pouch for small everyday items.
  • Dimensions: 20 cm wide by 14 cm high, measured externally while empty and laid flat. Internal usable space has not been measured.
  • Material: outer fabric is 100% polyester. Zipper material and any coating are unspecified.
  • Pack contents: one navy pouch. Objects used to demonstrate scale are not included.
  • Variants: only the navy version is supplied in this brief; no other size or color is established.
  • Open questions: care instructions, weight, load capacity and any water-resistance testing are unavailable.

For a real item, attach the relevant specification sheet, approved packaging text and product photographs. Name the person who can resolve each mismatch. If the packaging says two pieces but the order contains one, stop and reconcile the source facts before translating either version.

Keep the unknowns visible. Polyester alone does not establish a waterproof product. This brief supplies no certification or performance evidence, so it gives the writer no basis for adding waterproofing, durability ratings or protective claims.

Turn the brief into a field-by-field review.

The table is a suggested working document. The English phrases illustrate how to preserve meaning; they are not finished Japanese listing copy. Your catalog operator should identify the fields and restrictions that apply to the actual product category.

On smaller screens, scroll the table sideways. You can also focus the table region and use the left and right arrow keys.

Amazon's listing guidance describes variations as related products, such as size or color options. That does not establish a valid variation family for this fictional pouch. Have the catalog operator confirm the actual relationship before treating separate items as one family.

Give the Japanese reviewer decisions to make.

Ask for natural Japanese that retains the approved product meaning. A reviewer needs more than a US title to translate: provide the source facts, intended use, images, field map and a list of statements that remain unsupported.

  1. Terminology: which noun and use description fit this item without broadening what it can do? Ask for a short explanation in English so the product owner can approve the meaning.
  2. Quantity and dimensions: does the copy clearly distinguish one pouch from a set, and external dimensions from usable space?
  3. Claim strength: has a neutral fact become "premium," "protective" or another claim that needs evidence? Return those decisions to the product owner.
  4. Image consistency: do text in images, captions and the detail page describe the same color, contents and measurements?
  5. Buyer questions: which important questions cannot be answered from the supplied facts? Record them as questions instead of filling the gaps with persuasive copy.

Keep a simple handoff record for each field: source reference, draft wording, reviewer comment, product-owner decision, final approved wording and the person responsible for upload. Separate language approval from product-fact approval; a fluent sentence cannot establish an untested feature.

For example, if the reviewer proposes a Japanese phrase meaning "waterproof travel organizer," the product owner must resolve both the performance claim and the intended use. In this exercise, neither is supplied. Return to the narrower storage-pouch description while those questions remain open.

Inspect the assembled listing before release.

Use the final Japan preview or draft record to compare the actual title, features, description, attributes and images against the approved brief. Assign this check to someone who can read the Japanese copy, with the product owner available for factual questions.

  • Confirm product identity, brand, color and pack count across all fields and assets.
  • Compare every number and unit with its source; distinguish item dimensions from packaged dimensions.
  • Resolve truncated text, contradictory images and untranslated image labels before release.
  • Have the catalog operator apply the current category-specific title, image and attribute requirements rather than a universal character or image-size rule.
  • Keep unsupported claims out of the approved version and retain the open-question owner.
  • After upload, compare the displayed page with the approved wording and record discrepancies for the operator.

Product safety, labeling and other regulated questions need qualified review for the actual goods. Listing preparation is one part of a launch. Use our Amazon Japan launch guide for the wider sequence and our Japan import guide for preparation and specialist handoffs.

Choose the next person to involve.

If your facts are incomplete, start with the product owner. If the facts are settled but Japanese wording is unresolved, involve a qualified language reviewer. If the draft is ready but fields or catalog matching are unclear, involve the marketplace operator. This keeps each decision with the person equipped to answer it.

We plan Japan market entry for US brands and run the launch. Our Japan market-entry service connects planning, launch coordination and marketing support, with qualified specialists for regulated work.
